2 – Improbable Journey

The characters that Zucco meets in the play are not killers but are far more hideous within than Zucco. He has no motive for his killings as they are people that just get in his way. If we understand that then we understand Roberto Zucco. He wants to be ignored by society, he wants to be invisible. He wants to escape the city where he doesn’t have to conform to societies restrictions.

But society says you must conform, you must be a certain identity. 'You cannot leave the tracks.' He’d rather die than live in a society that doesn’t care about anyone that never really communicates with each other and always pressures you into being something other than yourself.

Each of the characters he meets on his journey are behaving as society expects them to behave. We see them as if they are written in headlines. ‘Older Brother’ ‘Girl’ ‘Elegant Lady’. This is partially the point of expressionism. To make a social point without creating naturalistic characters more to give them identities associated with areas of society.

e.g. The Prison Officers are not meant to be Bob Smith and Fred Jones as that would individualize them they are a representation of the Judicial system and how ridiculous it can be at times.
